On Thursday morning, Colin sat at the table in their kitchen while his father stood at the stove stirring a skillet filled with eggs. The smoky aroma of bacon rose from a platter on Colin’s right. He slid his hand toward one of the crispy strips.

“Hold your horses. Eggs are about ready.” After a few more brisk stirs, his father scooped two servings onto plates and set them on the table. He blessed the meal and then turned to Colin.

“Are you coming with me on my calls today? Or are you going to the church to practice on the piano?”

“Neither one.” He chewed a bite of bacon. “Today’s Miss Bentley’s music lesson.”

“You were just there Monday. This is getting to be a regular thing.”

Colin wished he could tell his father why he needed to spend the additional day every week with Merrie. The articles she’d produced filled him with admiration. She’d make some fortunate man a wonderful wife. What a pity all her attention seemed to be focused on advancing her career as a successful writer, even to the extent of deceiving her editor.

“I don’t think she’ll need extra help for too much longer.” Once she received confirmation from Mr. Kipler, she’d be on her way. True, he’d continue to see her on Thursdays, but he’d be denied the pleasure of working through her articles together.

He felt a stab of regret. The hours spent with Merrie had become the highlight of his week.

“You look disappointed.” A worried frown creased his father’s forehead. “It won’t do to become too attached to the young lady. You know that.”

“She’s one of my students. Nothing more.” He forked up some scrambled eggs, wishing he meant what he said.
